Design Build

ARCHITECTURE: DESIGN-BUILD STUDIO

University of Colorado – Denver Campus | College of Architecture and Planning
Lecturer:  Bill Moore
Community Athletic Sports Academy (C.A.S.A) – UCD Collaboration

OBJECTIVE:

The mission of the Design Build studio is to provide a sense of identity to the local non-profit group, CASA in the form of an architectural work that will serve both utilitarian and aesthetic purposes.

C.A.S.A.:

The proposed studio will involve designing and building a structure for the Community Athletic Sports Academy on the property at 6th Ave. and Sheridan in Lakewood, CO.  This non-profit has been providing a platform for inner-city (predominately Latino) children to be involved in soccer and other sports activities. The organization is lead by a group of founders with diverse backgrounds, who decided many years ago to commit all of their time and energy to providing sports activities and health education to children who could not afford the common offerings. They are also actively involved in other community activities such education, nutrition, and fundraising.

PROJECT:

The Design-Build Project will first involve a comprehensive site analysis and program development phase with the CASA representatives.  From there, students will focus, with input from the owner, on the design of a necessary and immediate project to execute within the course of the Spring Semester and “May-mester”.

Currently there are 2 proposed directions for the project:

1). A structural covering for their main soccer field.  Currently they do not have full use of their facility and programs in the winter months.  This is an ambitious, but rewarding project that will greatly contribute to the ultimate success of this non-profit agency.

2). A new concessions area providing seating and shade for the families and fans who watch the games. Site planning efforts will help better organize this area of the site and provide flexibility for future growth.

The goal is to deliver the completed project at the end of May, 2011.  The Spring semester will require a rigorous and focused effort to meet this goal.  Students should be prepared to design effectively, cooperate in a team environment and be able to attend regular studio sessions as well as participate in numerous site visits and after-hours work activities.
