DENVER, CO — The Community Athletic Sports Academy (CASA) announced today the convening of its founding Board of Directors. CASA is an exciting leadership and soccer academy that recruits inner city boys and girls from the Denver Metropolitan Area, ages four (4) to eighteen (18), and pairs them with coaches who serve as role models during competitive or recreational soccer tournaments. While youth play, parents are provided with opportunities to understand the impact sports can play in their child’s life. This includes efforts related to teaching best practices about fitness, mental health, nutrition and educational advancement.

“CASA was founded in 2008 as a way to support Latino youth in Denver by providing them with a safe space to play soccer,” said Maribelia Avalos, President and CEO of the organization. “We started with a group of just eight kids. Today, we have more than 1,000 youth enrolled. We have reached the point where we have to get ready for the next phase in our growth, and the Board of Directors will allow us to take that next step.”

CASA’s founding Board of Directors include a roster of civic, corporate and non-profit leaders from throughout the city. Each will offer invaluable insight on ways to expand the organization for long-term sustainability and growth, including areas specific to fundraising and development, communications and strategic partnerships. Members of the Board of Directors include:

  • Councilman Paul Lopez, District 3
  • Custo Avalos, TRiUMPH Business Services
  • Midy Aponte, Sánchez Ricardo
  • Kelly Benson, Aurora Central High School

<br\>“CASA’s mission is centered on providing youth with an improved quality of life via a safe environment they can call HOME,” said Tish Maes, Partner at Webb Group International and Chair of CASA’s Board of Directors. “I’m thrilled by the steps CASA is taking to invest in Denver youths’ personal development and to equip them with the necessary skills to become future leaders in our community. I’m proud to be affiliated with the organization and know the future is bright for CASA and all youth and parents involved.”
